Painting & drawing
The largest pieces are made on the floor, where there is room for them: banners, backdrops and collaborative paintings worked on by several students at once.
From the art room to the wall
Painting, drawing, craft and the things made for the school’s stage.

The artwork wall
279 works by CIRS students, printed in the Creative Corner of The Crossroads, the school’s magazine, across 32 issues. Each carries the credit it was printed with.

Names and classes are given as the magazine printed them, and the class is the one the student was in at the time. Where the magazine printed no name, none is given here.
Inside the art room
Art here is not an afternoon apart from the rest of school life. It is on the floor of the art room with a banner half-painted, on the tables of an exhibition being read by the students who made it, and in the masks and sets that end up under the stage lights.

Craft is taught alongside painting — work made by hand, finished with care, and put out on the table for the school to see.

Some work is too large for one pair of hands. A banner is laid out along a table and worked on from both sides; a clay pot passes between several students, each taking a band of it.
One pot, several hands
Two frames from the same sitting, painting pots for Pongal in January 2025: one pot, and several pairs of hands working around it, taking the brush in turn.

A house activity
An annual artistic highlight at CIRS, the Wall Magazines bring each house together around the students who make them. Vivid colours, striking art, intricate detailing and bold quotes only begin to describe their place in school life.

Made for the stage
Some of the art room’s work is made to be performed: masks, props and pieces of set that leave the studio for the school’s stage. The students here are holding up masks they made.
We have not yet matched them to photographs of the same masks in performance, so they are shown here on their own, with the people who made them.
CIRS TheatreThe exhibition
Finished work is put up for the school to see, and the students who made it stand beside it to talk visitors through it. Where the school’s records name the exhibition and its date, the caption does too.
